Westerners can’t compete with Bahria Town residents in lifestyle: Malik Riaz

Westerners can’t compete with Bahria Town residents in lifestyle: Malik Riaz

KARACHI: Founder and Chairman Bahria Town Malik Riaz says it is his passion and desire to develop Pakistan on a par with the US, Dubai and London.
He expressed these views in an exclusive talk with Geo here on Friday.Referring to the Clifton Flyover and Underpasses inaugurated on Friday, when the anchor asked why the private sector launched such projects which were deemed to be launched by the governments, he said: “Our people should have better education, and heath facilities but we are not working in any sector.

Seeing cleanliness of this underpass, the rest of Karachi may be cleaned. Bahria Town will pay its bills and we have linked it with our ‘Icon’. The Sindh government has nothing to pay for cleaning, or electricity.”

He said the project should have been completed in five months but it took one full year. “We spent seven months on dealing with the court cases and stay orders. I’m thankful to the court that allowed us to start work.”Asked what the Bahria Town would do to deal with problems like the accumulation of rainwater in the underpasses, he said if technical procedures are followed properly, water does not gather in any underpass of the world.

“God willing, not a drop of water would gather here.” He said the Bahria Town administration will ensure maintenance of latest lights throughout their lives. “Bahria Town will do it; we’ll pay all the expenditure including electricity bills.

Asked how the Bahria Town administration will deal with the problem of wall-chalking, Malik Riaz said wall-chalking could not be done on the tiles which they had used in the underpass. When asked how much the Metro Bus, which will run from Bahria Town to Tower, will facilitate the residents of Bahria Town, he said they were not only catering to the Bahria Town, but also to the entire Karachi.

“About 370,000 people will travel on the Metro Bus daily. We have signed an MoU with Daewoo in this regard. We want to start this project tomorrow if hurdles are removed in our way. Once Sindh government procedures are complete and tenders are announced, other people should also come so that there is no stay order or other problem. Bahria Town is investing money at a distance of 45km. We have not got a go-ahead so far. We, however, have got proposal, design, feasibility and environmental approval, thank God.”

The Bahria Town chief guaranteed that if hurdles were removed tomorrow, they will start work day after tomorrow.“You will be traveling in Metro Bus on the 10th or 11th month.” Talking about the bus route and the fare, he said the service would cover the whole of Karachi.

“Its first phase is 45KM and second 28 KM. Its subsidized fare will be Rs20. It will follow the pattern of Lahore and Islamabad. I appreciate Mian Shahbaz Sharif for doing a good job there. Seeing him, we have started work here.”

Asked if he wanted the people of Pakistan to have the same lifestyle enjoyed by the westerners, Malik Riaz said Bahria Town had provided a lifestyle far better than the one being enjoyed by the westerners.

“The cine club, parks, mosques that Bahria Town has built have no precedent the world over. I throw you a challenge that we can be competed anywhere in the world.”When the anchor asked if he was going to build the third biggest mosque of the world after Harmain Sharifain, Mr. Malik said: “You cannot compete with that. We say our mosque can house 800,000 worshipers. Disney Park is being built at a cost of Rs6 billion. Night Safari Singapore is under construction. Clubs, cinema, schools and hospitals are being built in Bahria Town. The residents of Bahria Town do not go outside.”

Mr. Malik said he was not afraid of problems and hurdles in his projects. “Problems are profit and God helps us.”The Bahria Town chief said he had read somewhere that all heroes had to face problems. “You want to do something but others want to stop you. They want to take Pakistan back to Stone Age. We can develop and be prosperous if the judiciary, the army, politicians and bureaucrats united on one platform. We have to bring our money to Pakistan to run it. The biggest problem the country has been facing availability of clean drinking water. Diseases like cancer and hepatitis are spreading. All our resources are in the service of the nation. Millions of people are treated in our hospitals. You will get double the amount you spent on welfare.”

Fasahat Mohiuddin adds from Karachi: Bahria Town Flyover and underpass were inaugurated here on Friday costing Rs1.8 billion.

Bahria Town chairman Malik Riaz said in two years he could put Pakistan ahead of the US and Europe if the army, bureaucrats, political leader, judges and all stakeholders unite on single platform.

The oldest worker of Bahria Town, Ghulam Jillani, 70, a carpenter, cut the ribbon along with Malik Riaz on the Labour Day. Riaz said Jillani’s family was going on Umrah financed by the Bahria Town. Malik said new projects would be inaugurated by their workers after their completion.

Zain Malik, Vice Chief Executive of Bahria Town, and KMC Administrator Saqib Ahmed Soomro were also present on the occasion.“This is a gift to the KMC and Karachi. I am thankful to the KMC, KE and SSGC for providing services for this project free of cost.”

The cost of the project is Rs1.8 billion and its name is Bahria Town Flyover and Underpasses. It comprises three underpasses and two underground pedestrian passes.

Riaz said all the credit for completion of this project goes to Mustafa Kamal, former city Nazim Karachi. Malik said he had first time visited this place to cut the tape and right from designing and completion of this project credit went to Mustafa Kamal. He said Mustafa Kamal had worked day and night for the completion of this project.

Riaz said Mustafa Kamal loved Karachi and Pakistan. He said Pakistan was right now the most underdeveloped country in the world and it could develop if local investors invest their money instead of making investments abroad.

Riaz said foreign investors asked them if local investors were not investing in Pakistan then why they should do it.Malik urged judges not to give stay orders in development projects. “I also urge judges that before giving stay orders, they should also hear the other party.”

He said Bus Rapid Transit System will be started and this had been extended to the DHA. Replying to a question that why public sector projects were not completed in which political leaders were involved, Malik Riaz said they were all corrupt.“If a desert like Dubai could get so much development and progress, why not Karachi?”

Of Bogota and Karachi: Bus Rapid Transit System In Bahria Town Karachi

The plans for transport to a gated community off the Super Highway are just as spectacular as the real estate project itself. The developer has enlisted global experts to design the route that will connect Merewether Tower to Sohrab Goth where the project sits.
This route is called the Blue line, which was designed by the Japanese when they came up for solutions to Karachi’s traffic woes in 2010. The Blue line is meant to be BRTS or bus rapid transit in which a cordoned-off strip is dedicated to fast-moving buses in the middle of the road. BRTS, or the ‘jangla bus’ as it is known in Lahore, is internationally accepted as the cheapest and most effective way to move thousands of people.
The Blue line is just one of several lines designed around the old Karachi Circular Railway system. Other international groups have been visiting Karachi to prepare feasibility reports. The ITDP in Indonesia has been exploring the Yellow line and the ADB is said to be looking at the Red line.
Bahria Town’s interest in the Blue line is understandable given that it cuts through the city. It has proposed to the Sindh government that it will pay for this line. But as the project is a big one, the Sindh government has to open a bid. In the meantime, however, Bahria is already designing it, “so work could start immediately just in case the government gives the go-ahead tomorrow,” according to Ashar Lodhi of the local consultant Exponent Engineering.
Bahria Town has brought on board the people who created the world’s most famous BRTS line, TransMilenio in Bogota, Columbia. On Tuesday, an intelligent transport systems expert, Adriana Palacio of consultant GSDplus, spoke at NED University. TransMilenio is owned by the people in Bogota and has become a part of its culture, she said. “This is Karachi’s BRT system,” she argued. “It should be branded according to the city.”
Palacio is helping design the technology for fare collection, ticketing and fleet management among other elements for the Blue line. “You can have a smart card,” she told The Express Tribune on Monday. “We have to see how comfortable people are with technology.” A passenger needs to only touch or hover the card over the reader to pay and get on the bus. They can then recharge it at the ticketing booths. No swiping will be needed.
“We found in Bogota that people on average tended to pay for 2.5 trips,” she had explained. So if in Karachi one trip will cost, say Rs30, people are expected to give Rs75 each time they recharge their card. The smart cards can be blocked over a helpline if stolen.
Palacio will be working on a passenger info system, one that gauges when the next bus should come and a bus docking system. One concern is coordinating with the other parties that might be building the other lines in Karachi. “Integration is not just about convenience,” she said. “We need to work more on it because without it, the system wouldn’t work at all.” If the Green line intersects with the Blue line at Gurumandir, for example, Bahria’s team would ideally want to integrate the IT systems so buses don’t smash into each other.
Palacio listed other elements for the BRTS such as a website, a call centre for complaints and information and a surveillance system. Given that service and safety are high priorities, Lodhi said that they will push for a BRTS police as mentioned in the new Sindh Mass Transit Authority law. The violence that broke out in Lahore when people attacked the Metrobus is a concern in Karachi. “That is why [the Blue line] will be elevated,” explained Lodhi. When questioned about the historic buildings along Bunder Road, he said: “Can we afford not to make it.” The ultimate solution would be to turn the road pedestrian and ban cars but it is unlikely any political party will be able to take that pressure.

Bahria Town Karachi and K-Electric Signs Power Plant Agreement In Dubai

Bahria Town Karachi to get 24-hour continuous power supply

Bahria Town Chairman Malik Riaz Hussain has reiterated his vision of putting Karachi on a par with the leading metropolitan cities of the world, and, this time, it’s none other than the hardcore issue of Karachi—the energy crisis, says a press release.

In a historic development, Bahria Town (Pvt) Ltd and K-Electric Limited have entered into a strategic partnership of multi-billion rupees for electric power generation through coal and/or LNG in the coming 3-4 years and electricity distribution services, for reliable and improved power supply in the business hub of the country.

The VCE Bahria Town, Zain Malik and CEO of K-Electric, Tayyab Tareen signed the relevant agreements on behalf of their companies in a solemn ceremony held in Dubai. Malik Riaz Hussain, Tabish Gohar (Chairman, K-Electric) and Ahmed Ali Riaz Malik (CEO, Bahria Town) were also present during the signing ceremony.

This strategic partnership is aimed at ensuring an end to the energy crisis. It will also curtail the electricity shortage through reduction of distribution losses and introduction of latest technology. Both parties re-affirmed their mutual commitment to strive for the betterment of Karachi.

Malik Riaz Hussain, Bahria Town Chairman, praised the K-Electric company for their endeavours to reduce the power crisis in Karachi and expressed his determination to keep on striving and leaving no stone unturned to bring up Karachi on a par with its counterparts in the world.

He added that Bahria Town, Karachi, projects are already providing best employment and profitable businesses to hundreds of thousands of people in Karachi. He reiterated that their economic mobility, through adding healthy business activities to the city, including Grand Jamia Mosque with capacity of eight lac people, golf course, theme park, night safari, university, hospital, shopping mall, etc., will bring along an economic & cultural revolution and will in turn bring positive change in the law & order situation of the metropolis. He emphasized that initiation of possession in Bahria Town, Karachi, in a short span of eight months only is a clear proof that Bahria Town delivers what it commits. He characterized the agreements with K-Electric as a new era in resolving the energy crisis on eternal, perpetual and permanent basis and start of a new one for Karachi & Pakistan.

Malik Riaz said that billions of rupees electricity projects based on coal and LNG are being built for Karachiites, and it would make 24-hour continuous power supply to Karachi Bahria Town.

Malik Riaz Sb calls in at ARY’s morning show; pledges donation for deaf girl

One and a half year old Fatima was a normal, healthy toddler who spent her days crawling and playing like others her age do. Yet until a few months ago, she had stopped responding to noises and her parents were convinced the girl had gone deaf. After appealing to Sanam Baloch to aid them in averting this misfortune, the parents showed up at the Morning Show on ARY yesterday. Using ARY’s popular and global platform, the morning show hostess selflessly urged her audience to demonstrate magnanimity through donations to get Fatima cured. The target sum was 17 lac rupees and after collecting the lofty sum, it would have been used to provide treatment to Fatima at Agha Khan Hospital.
Returning from a commercial break, Sanam Baloch announced the ecstatic news that Bahria Town founder and business magnate Malik Riaz had promised to donate the remaining amount which would be left after the audience had chipped in. The news uplifted everyone’s moods in the room and the parents were visibly thankful of Mr.Riaz for being mindful of the common man’s pain yet again.
Fatima’s parents were destitute people who could barely make ends meet, as her father was an ordinary tailor. He confessed in a dismal tone that he did not have the financial means to provide his daughter with the required treatment at a respectable hospital. Fatima’s mother had also made a heart rendering appeal for help and cited that it was her sole wish that her cured daughter would call her ‘Maa’ one day.
Malik Riaz has always been on the forefront as far as helping the poor is concerned. The business tycoon has amassed an impressive sum through his successful real estate business ventures. Yet, Mr.Riaz has never shied away from providing relief in monetary form to those who have dire need of it. The business tycoon cum philanthropist had earlier in 2010, in an interview with CNN promised a staggering sum of $2bn in support of Pakistani flood victims. Malik Riaz has also been actively participating in building the world’s third largest mosque in Karachi. The sanctified place of worship would house an impressive 800,000 devout worshippers. Just a couple of months ago, when tragedy struck the Army Public School in Peshawar, when militants stormed the APS and took out schoolchildren and female teachers by opening indiscriminate firing, Malik Riaz again rose to the situation.
Pakistan is proud of Malik Riaz and the selfless amount of money he has donated for his countrymen in times of need. We wish him continued success and fortune in his business endeavours whilst hoping and praying that he keeps on coming to the aid of millions who encounter misfortune. All the best for Fatima and we hope she regains the sense of hearing again!
